Illinois Ebike Law – Classification eBike Frame Label
The new Illinois ebike law will define a statewide mandate for clearly labeling the classification of all pedal assist bicycles operated in the state of Illinois that are purchased after January 1 2018.
If you are a Illinois ebike commuter or trail rider, the law asks to define the class of your electric bicycle for road and trail enforcement.
This law contains language that is now becoming common across the nation as interest and ridership of electric pedal assist bicycles grows.

The summarized amendment to Section 5 of the Illinois Vehicle Code state that ebikes that are operated on Illinois roads and trails will need to show a label stating motor wattage, assist classification, and top assist speed. The label will need to be in Arial 9pt type affixed to the frame in visible location.
It should be noted that ebike access (under 750w) has been specifically granted to be classified as a bicycle.“A person may operate a low-speed electric bicycle upon any highway, street, or roadway authorized for use by bicycles, including, but not limited to, bicycle lanes.”
The new law, however, leaves the door open for municipalities throughout the state to restrict their use in some places where traditional bicycles are allowed. The law goes into effect on January 1, 2018.
